After finishing my dual studies at the DHBW Mosbach I planed a gap year for myself. The main reason for my gap year was the boring situation in Mosbach, which got even worse due to covid. Therefore I went to Rwanda!
The gap year is not just a year of Holiday, it was a voluntary year supported by the German government at the Rubavu technical College (RTC TSS). This school was financed from Friends of Ruanda e.V. a small German NGO, which also send me there.
Most of the time i supported the teachers in Mathematics and ICT, and i also was a student in the French classes. But when i found some SDRs in the telecommunications classroom and i could convince the telecom teacher Leopold to help me, the plan was settled to recieve satellitepictures. Here you can see me with some first SDR trys in Rwanda.
First we have to build an antenna, which is little bit more tricky then in Germany, as there is no mall where you can buy all your stuff. So because we only have limited access, we choose a QFH antenna design with plastic pipes and coax cables. With a soldering iron and tinn, a saw, pen and paper, and some glue for shoes we build our antenna.
As we finished the antenna we recieved some first satelliteimages at the schoolyard. Unfourtunatly the pictures were quite small because Rwanda is justly called the country of a thousand hills. And in the north are some ancient volcanos which are upto 4500 meters high and block the signal.
Hence the only reasonable thing to do was to climb on Muhungwe, a 3000 meter high mountain which is close to our school. To capture some satelliteimages we went up with a tent, food, water and equipment. Once up the mountain we recieved images from horizon to horizon, so you can see from Egypt to South Africa.
